Bardiya District is in the Midwest of Nepal and situated in the flat lands of the Terai. The majority of the people living in this region are Tharu, Muslim and Dalit (casteless poor). Many live in slum villages with minimal infrastructure and no proper toilets. The region is also prone to occasional flooding during the rainy season when the river floods its bank.
