Phase 2 - Water
The community has been facing a lack of drinking water lately. Several existing public taps have gone dry and villagers now have to walk farther to the few remaining working public taps to collect drinking water. To make the situation worse is that these taps run only for a few hours at certain hours of the day. Collecting water then takes up a greater proportion of their time, eating into the women’s time in the field and the children’s time in school and studies.
Villagers lament that existing springs in the mountains behind them have also ceased and that the nearest steady water source is a river about 20 kilometers away in the valley. They also report that a neighboring army camp and a foreign private home-owner have resorted to deep-boring into the mountain in order to extract water from the ground.
After seeking the opinions of 2 local Geologists and N.G.O., Environment and Public Health Organization (ENPHO) in November 2010, it is suggested that the following multi-approach be implemented:
-
Rainwater Harvesting
Installing gutters to roof and channeling rainwater to storage tanks for each house. Monsoon period is June – August.
-
Water Management & Treatment
Repairing and building storage tanks near existing water springs to improve continuous water supply. Treating grey water for reuse.
-
New Water Source
Searching and tapping from new springs.
Conducting electrical survey of the mountain rock formation so as to locate water table.
