Handover in Nala

KAVRE, NEPAL: POST QUAKE UPDATE Among the 319 deaths, 2,789 badly injured, 59,933 completely destroyed houses and 23,714 partially destroyed homes in Kavre district, we are working with 138 very needy families from 5 VDC (Village Development Committee) in this district. We have completed 33 houses thus far (12 in Nala and 21 in Opi) and 9 houses in Rabi are in progress.

Ugrachandi (NALA) VDC

3,737 houses in Ugrachandi VDC are badly damaged. Together with village leaders, we selected 17 most needy families. However, 5 families were not able to resolve some land issues, so we worked with the other 12 families first. The co-partnership agreement is for us to provide an earthquake resistant single-storey house frame complete with reinforced concrete foundation and CGI roofing while beneficiaries source for and put up their own walls, windows and doors.

A Handover Ceremony was held in the community church for the 12 families.

It was a remarkable milestone for everyone especially when the VDC Secretary (left) came for the event.

Nala #1: Ishori Bogati (Suresh Bogati)

She received a 3-room house design. 3 months after we built and handed over the house frame to her, she completed putting up the brick walls and windows on her own. She, her 2 daughters and aged mother are now living in it and are extremely happy and grateful for all the help rendered to her.

Last month he completed adding a second storey and finished putting up the walls. 3 weeks ago, he and his family had a house dedication prayer and they have since shifted in. For them, this house is a dream come true and Thulo Bhai is very thankful to the community who helped him to rebuild.

Nala #3: Sano Bhai Bogati

In 2015, Sano Bhai’s mother passed away from end-stage kidney failure after about a year of expensive dialysis treatment. His youngest brother suffered a serious road accident and another brother died suddenly from suspected alcohol abuse. Coupled with losing his house to the quake, Sano Bhai was left to shoulder the family’s financial burden. Thanks to the community’s decision to include him in the rebuilding programme, he now has a new roof over his head. He has completed adding a second storey to the 4-room house frame and finished doing up the brick walls. They will move in sometime in August 2016 once the painting work is done.

Due to financial hardship, her 3 sons left home to work elsewhere and rarely returns or sends money back. After the quake, she lost her mud house and everything in it. She is very thankful that she now has a 4-room house frame and is waiting for funds to build the walls. We hope she will receive help soon so she can have a fully completed house.

Nala #6: Bal Krishna Pariyar

As a tailor, Bal Krishna has a lot of financial needs. After his house was destroyed in the quake, he lives in a temporary shelter on someone else’s property. His land is just big enough for a 1-room house frame. He decided to let his elder son, Mohan Pariyar and his family, live there and let him take responsibility to put up the brick walls. When Bal Krishna receives more funds, he will build another storey over this room and he can then live there with his younger son Ram Krishna. Till then, Bal Krishna will continue to stay in the temporary shelter.

She is a widow with 3 sons and 2 daughters. One daughter is living with her and the rest of her children are married and living elsewhere. After the quake destroyed her house, she took shelter in the church because none of her children or relatives came to help her. Due to her extreme circumstances, we provided a 1-room house frame and waived her part of the agreement by putting up the walls, too. She just had a house dedication prayer and is now living in it with her daughter. With a proper roof over her head again, she is very thankful for the special help.
