Rebuilding Life Stories

KAVRE, NEPAL: REBUILDING UPDATE Sadhu Ram Rokka is from Baral Gaun village. He is a skilled carpenter as well as a mason. Because of his bad drinking habit, he was not able to save money for his family. To try to earn more, he went overseas to work in Malaysia, Qatar and Dubai 8 years ago. But he spent whatever he earned on alcohol. As a result, his health deteriorated and was forced to return to Nepal 3 years later, penniless and in a debt. Subsequently the earthquake in 2015 destroyed his house and left him devastated.

It was at this critical juncture that one of our team masons was fired for poor work performance and we had to look for a replacement. When we knew he was available, we approached him and he gladly accepted our offer.

Sadhu Ram worked hard, learnt to follow the building code and very quickly became our lead mason. His skill and workmanship is the best we have seen thus far. When he saw that we are really helping the poor of the poor by giving them solid quake resistant houses instead of a temporary shelter, it struck him that we are really doing long term rebuilding, rather than short term relief. Not long after joining us, he stopped his drinking habit and was able to save, provide for this family and even had enough money to repay his loan.

His good reputation and resourcefulness led him to start training and hiring his own team of 3 masons to work hand-in-hand with us. It will not be long before his loan is fully repaid and he can rebuild his house as well.

Sadhu Ram shares that he was on the brink of ending his life when we asked him to join us. It was a timely divine intervention. He is very glad and grateful to be a part of this whole rebuilding project because more than getting a job, he got a second chance in life that comes with a future worth celebrating.

We are thankful that he is now helping others find hope by giving them jobs so they can eventually rebuild their houses and livelihood.

Good things can come out from the ashes of calamity
